Joyful performing arts take the Treasure Valley stage in December

The month of December is always ripe with activities and events to keep people busy. Holiday parties, family gatherings – dreaded or not – tree decorating, holiday bazaars, and so much more fill the days and nights.

Experiencing these activities is no different in the Treasure Valley, especially when it comes to entertainment options.

Music, of the holiday variety and otherwise, fills the ears and soothes the soul. Comedy does the same, providing a laugh or two along the way. Art exhibits, drag shows, and burlesque performances all close out the year with a bang.

In a month with plenty of options, December is full of theater offerings, ballet classics, and a sleigh full of events to keep you entertained.

Treasure Valley Theater in December

Theaters productions in December 2024 have a little bit of everything for everyone, starting over at Boise Little Theater. This company has two shows currently open.

On the BLT mainstage, A Christmas Story: The Musical opened November 22 and runs through December 14. Over in their black box theater, for those looking to dip into more "adult" fun, The Eight: Reindeer Monologues opened November 29 and runs through December 21.

Stage Coach Theatre brings a tale of Santa Claus to the stage. Well, the jolly man and Martians. Santa Claus Conquers the Martians opened November 29 and closes on December 22.

Two holiday favorites are taking the stage in the Treasure Valley this December. Treasure Valley Children's Theater presents A Christmas Carol (November 30 - December 21). Over in Nampa, the Music Theatre of Idaho gives audiences Irving Berlin's White Christmas (December 5 - 7).

The music of Stephen Sondheim returns to the Treasure Valley with Merrily We Roll Along, produced by Alley Repertory Theater. This marks the first-ever production of this musical in the Treasure Valley, opening on December 13 and running through December 28.

Boise Contemporary Theater also brings music to the stage with their production of The Lion, December 4 - 21.

Staged readings and other live events from theater companies and performance arts groups are also taking place in December. See the Theater/Performing Arts page for ticket info and more on all these events.

Ballet & Orchestra performances

This time of year is not complete without sugar plum fairies, a mouse king, and the sweet music of Tchaikovsky.

No less than two companies will explore the world of The Nutcracker this December. Ballet Idaho presents their rendition December 6 - 15 at The Morrison Center.

The Boise Ballet Academy brings The Nutcracker to life December 20 - 22 at the Nampa Civic Center.

If a night of symphony music is more your style, Boise Phil presents Messiah at Cathedral of the Rockies on December 20 and 21. And the Meridian Symphony Orchestra presents Home for the Holidays December 14 and 15.

Chorale performances – it is the time of year for them, after all – are taking place around the Treasure Valley throughout the month.
