A perfect solution to breaking a winter cold snap is to put on your fancy scarves and knit caps, brave the weather, and find warmth inside a theater.

Okay, you do not necessarily need scarves and caps if you choose. It is a good idea, however, to see a production or two of Treasure Valley theater this January and early February.

Professional productions, well-known musicals, children's theater (and theater for families), and readings offer a variety of options to audiences. A world premiere is also around the corner, bringing theater around the greater Treasure Valley off to a rocking start in 2025.

Ongoing shows

Two shows recently had their opening night come and go. Over at Boise Little Theater, The Hallelujah Girls by Jones Hope Wooten has its final performances January 23, 24, and two performances on January 25. Directed by Camilla Boylan, this comedy is not to be missed.

On January 17, Urinetown opened at Stage Coach Theatre. This musical by Mark Hollman and Greg Kotis won three Tony Awards in 2002, including Best Book of a Musical. Directed by Taylor Vickers, Urinetown is a humorous satire of capitalism, social irresponsibility, and musical theater itself and has performances running through February 8.

Treasure Valley theater productions opening soon

A trio of opportunities to catch opening night performances happens starting January 21. Broadway Boise welcomes back on that night a little musical called Hamilton. This touring production has performances running through February 2 at the Morrison Center in Boise.

On the Other Hand, We're Happy by Daf James heads to Boise Contemporary Theater. Directed by Award-winning Off Broadway director Cameron Watson, this show has preview performances January 22 - 24. Opening night is January 25, with performances running until February 8.

Eagle Theatre Company is back with their first production of 2025, These Shining Lives by Melanie Marnich. This play, based on the true story of the Radium Girls, runs January 24 thru February 9.

The last week of January, another trio of shows take the stage. The world premiere of Deep Blue by local playwright Gregg Irwin arrives at Boise Little Theater Black Box. Performances begin on January 30 and continue through February 9.

If you are into rocking out, Music Theatre of Idaho presents School of Rock: The Musical. This musical based on the film of the same name will be at the Nampa Civic Center for four performances: January 30, January 31, and two shows on February 1.

And that same weekend (January 31 and February 1), at Caldwell High School, Children's Theatre presents The Flower of Sunnymount Crest.

BCT has two readings on the horizon. The first is part of the company's 5X5 reading series. The Shark is Broken by Ian Shaw and Joseph Nixon starts at 7 p.m. on January 27.

The other is part of the Children's Reading Series, taking place on February 2 at 2 p.m. The Wind in the Wildflowers is adapted from The Wind in the Willows, with the story by Grace Ward and a score from Elke Meyers.
